Manipal: Workshop on Influenza Surveillance Data begins

Manipal, 11 October 2017: A three-day workshop on Influenza Surveillance Data Management, a World Health Organisation sponsored programme, hosted by Manipal Centre for Virus research (MCVR), Manipal University was inaugurated by Dr Kayla Laserson, Country director, Centres for disease control and Prevention (CDC), India here on Tuesday at the Chaitya Hall of FIVV. Dr. G Arunkumar, professor and head, MCVR, who is coordinating the Workshop welcomed the gathering.

 

 

Delegates from 20 national institutes from all over the country, including National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and National Institute for Virology (NIV) will deliberate on developing a common Influenza surveillance data collection and analysis platform.

 

Highlighting the contribution of MCVR towards diagnostic healthcare, especially influenza and its participation in Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), Dr Laserson commented, “There is a need to strengthen the four core areas of GHSA which include, systematic disease surveillance, strengthen the labs, strengthen the workforce and have planned procedures for emergency responses”.

 

Dr. Narayana Sabhahit, registrar, Manipal University, who presided over the inaugural function stressed on the need for standardised data collection for quality evidence and said, “Manipal is an example of successful public private partnership in public health”. MCVR, MU is partnering with government and international agencies to facilitate Influenza surveillance in India.

 

“Influenza remains an enigma for policymakers worldwide,” said Dr. AK Bhansal Additional Director, National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Delhi. “The need to standardize collection of data is paramount to understand the epidemiology of Influenza,” remarked Dr. Pavana Murthy, National Professional officer, WHO Country office for India.
