Mangalore: Grotto of Bantwal Church vandalised
Mangalore, 14 October 2013: Protests erupted in Bantwal late on Saturday night after a grotto in the church was reportedly vandalised by a mob. More than 500 devotees demanded the arrest of the persons responsible for the attack.
The protestors assembled in front of the Our Lady of Loretto Church, around four kilometres from B.C. Road, after the glass casing of the Mother Mary statue was found damaged and soft drinks bottles were found near the grotto.
It is alleged that the Parish Priest and Assistant Parish Priest were in the church when the attack occurred, but they remained oblivious to it until churchgoers noticed the destruction of the glass.
“This is the first time the church has been targeted. Even during 2008 (when a series of churches were attacked in the district), our church had remained untouched,” said Alvin Pinto, a protestor. The protest continued late into Sunday with the main demand of a speedy police investigation.
District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai pacified the protestors by promising a swift action.
Dakshina Kannada superintendent of Police Shantanu Sinha said the situation was peaceful and that incident was being investigated. The Bantwal Town Police have registered a case.
