KMC has best diagnostic facilities, says Dr Ballal

Manipal, 28 February 2018: Kasturba Medical College and NABL Accredited Kasturba Hospital Laboratory Services, Manipal organized Diagnocon 2018, workshops and conference, from February 23 to 25, 2018 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Manipal Academy of Higher Education. One hundred and fifty people participated in the workshops and over 300 were present for the conference.

 

 

Inaugurating the event, Pro Chancellor, MAHE, Dr. H S Ballal said that the university’s flagship institution Kasturba Medical College was endowed with the best diagnostic facilities available anywhere in the country. Adding to that was the Vice Chancellor, Dr. H Vinod Bhat who said, ‘KMC is among the first private medical colleges started in 1950s. At that time, there were only 27 medical colleges in India. Today, there are more than 500 medical colleges and Kasturba Medical College is considered as the model. Along with the institute, the diagnostics have come up to its highest excellence in last few years, and the role of the diagnosticians have changed – it is no more restricted to laboratories, but at the patient’s bed side and public health.”

 

Dr. Poornima Baliga, the Pro Vice Chancellor said, “this is the first time in the country that seven major diagnostic disciplines have come together to showcase their strength and vouch their commitment towards better patient care”. Dr. Pragna Rao, Dean of Kasturba Medical College and the Organizing Chairperson said that the event was planned to bring diagnosticians, clinicians and researchers on one platform from different fields to ignite young minds. She also announced starting of Laboratory Management course in Kasturba Medical College soon.

 

Among many eminent speakers during conference, Dr. Sujay Prasad from Anand Diagnostic Laboratory, Bengaluru emphasized on understanding capability in setting up a clinical laboratory in the current healthcare landscape. Dr. Ravi V from Department of Neurovirology, NIMHAMS said that diagnostics was useful only if it delivered at the right time to the right patient – and there should be more number of user-friendly point-of-care tests available for earliest diagnosis of the killer diseases.

 

Dr. Anand Deshpandey from P D Hinduja National Hospital highlighted the importance of quality assurance in HLA laboratory, Dr. Dhanya Lakshmi N from Medical Genetics at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad highlighted the application of Multiplex Ligation Probe Amplification to diagnose common genetic disorders. Dr. Preeti Chaudhari, the Consultant Histopathologist from UK expressed her happiness for the multi-disciplinary conference where a diverse audience meets experts from every diagnostic field.
